Often temperament has a lot to do with the breeding of the dog, regardless of breed. If someone is breeding for fighting dogs and you want a family pet, don't buy from that breeder. I would do the same thing with purchasing a border collie. If it's bred to bite livestock, I don't want it as a family pet. Use positive training techniques. Socialize the dog (in only positive situations) with other animals and children. Do not try to make your dog aggressive. That is just not a wise thing.
