CoreNet Global Tour of Skechers Distribution Facility
SoCal CEO representative Dwight Cromie recently had the opportunity to accompany CoreNet Global on their tour of the new Skechers Distribution Facility in Moreno Valley, CA. The facility spans over 1.8 million square feet, and is the largest LEED Certified Facility in the nation to date. Everything from the building's construction methods to the completed robotic amenities inside was built according to modern "green" standards. The enormous structure represents both a tremendous accomplishment, as well as economic opportunity, as it will provide countless jobs to the region.
President and Chief Executive of Highland Fairview, Iddo Benzeevi, reports that to build this facility "it took a lot of ingenuity because there is a lot of new technologies incorporated into the building. First, it is the largest building of it's kind in the United States; more significantly, it will be the largest LEED Certified green building in the country." He went on to share that "it also has the most advanced automation and robotics systems incorporated into a building." These groundbreaking mechanical features of the facility will drastically increase productivity. The original "5 facilities combined had the capacity to move about 5 to 7 thousand products an hour, [the new Skechers building] will do about 20 thousand...the end result of which, between the energy-savings and the systems in the building, will yield about $25 million in annual savings, compared to the existing structure." In summary, not only is Skechers plant the largest green building in the nation, it will also be the most productive.
The new Skechers distribution center will also greatly influence the local economy. Lisa Brandl with the Riverside County Economic Development Agency claims "this is a fantastic facility that will create jobs for this area and Riverside County and enhance the sales tax base for Riverside County." One of the overall goals of Riverside County is to create more and more jobs for the region so as to both help residents and attract more companies to set up facilities in the surrounding area. Brandl went on to share that Riverside County offers many money-saving incentives for companies, particularly those looking to do exporting. The new Skechers facility alone will bring in $194 million of annual economic benefit for the region, so increasing the number of large distribution centers is an incredibly beneficial move to Riverside County.
In conclusion, the new Skechers Distribution Facility impressively stands as a testament to the green building initiatives throughout the Southern California region. Alongside creating countless jobs, increasing productivity, and attracting more businesses to follow suit, it's hard to believe all of this comes with a fraction of environmental impact.
