To me, this show and song perfectly symbolize the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s. Here you have the Season 1 (1979) theme, which is a bit goofier with Mrs. Garret singing, and just generally screams "1970s TV show". Then, a year later, the same song came back with new lyrics and a new attitude, and a new era was born.
I generally prefer the 80s version, but I like this one because of the cool ending.

I really liked the first season. I don't know why they had to change things after the first season. Too bad they got rid of the four girls and it was too bad that Tootie took off her skates!
-
@MrKeithAlan There is one episode in season 9 where all of the original girls returned except for Molly
-
So they got rid of all the hot chix and kept the ugly, fat ones....but it worked out at the end
-
I didn't remember that Molly Ringwald was on this show!! Man, I'm OLD!!!
-
@ejr1978 No, it was just Molly. The other girls appeared in a few episodes in seasons 2 and 3.

I like the Facts of Life with more than 4 girls, like it was in the 1st season.

Jo was pretty hot, actually.
Probably my favorite FOL opening, partially 'cause Mrs. Garret sings.

wow, there was a long range of women then. some who looked good as well. too bad it was only 4 after that. in my opinion, throught all the seasons, it was like 4 different shows, not one
