Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I have been working hard on my chords and I've been studying songs from the Jazz Real Book to get better at using them. My problem is getting the best sounding voicings. I can't seem to write a chord progression that sounds any good. Is there any kind of study method, or perhaps a general way to approach practicing the use of chords voicings when composing chord progressions? Thanks for all of the excellent lessons you post on YouTube.
- Roderick, Germany.

A: When it comes to chord progressions it's important to keep in mind that upper melodic lines will link one chord to the next in a progression. In the video I will explain a three part method that involves; practicing linking chords together with an ascending top line; Working on linking chords together that apply a descending top line; And, keeping a common tone at the top of each chord.

  • You should also check Mickey Baker's 'Complete Course in Jazz Guitar'

  • @mikedg18

The Mickey Baker stuff is a fantastic book series, thanks for this suggestion! I'll include the links to these books in the handout for the lesson plan. Thanks again for the great tip.

  • Beautiful and great for training. I would like to see the face of the person while he is playing.. I know that sounds silly for a training or teaching video but it makes it more personal feeling..

  • none of his videos should have dislikes there is nothing to dislike about them

  • wow for once a good youtube video has no dislikes :)

  • I know you love theory and stuff, do you think you could put together something about the scales? People always show the ones they like or use most often, I kind of need to have more than just the major and minor or just mixolydian and phrygian. its like i can only find one or two and thats it. Thanks.
