The nations of the Commonwealth were joined by the Armenians in the 14th century, when Polish king Casimir the Great annexed the Halych Ruthenia - the lands which today are western Ukraine.
The Armenians, granted by the king the rights of freedom of creed, self-government and legal separateness, were renowned goldsmiths and artisans. Armenian merchants and artusans whi provided the Commonwealth's markets with merchandise from the East, as well as of their own produce, exerted and oriental influence on the tastes of the rich Polish society and contributed to their orientalization. Also, serving as mediators in diplomatic and cultural affairs, they had an impact on the image of Polish culture abroad.
