Gangs of New York is a 2002 film set in the middle 19th century in the Five Points district of New York City. It was directed by Martin Scorsese, with Liam Neeson, Daniel Day-Lewis and Baby DiCaprio, and written by Steven Zaillian. The film is loosely inspired by Herbert Asbury's 1928 book The Gangs of New York

@cerenimoon Well, the song doesn't get too specific about what happened. All we know for sure is the ship sank, the dude got himself safe while leaving his shipmates to die. The captain and crew are with the other guy come to get revenge. I think the other guy also survived, but only barely. No particular reason to think he's alive, just makes sense to me that the spirits would need a living person to hunt down their victim, why they're all lying in wait and he's not

Shane McGowan tells the story. He was listening to some radio station abroad when some listener asked for "Turkish Song" by The Damned; the DJ didn't know of the band, so he said that he was unable to find "Turkish Song of the Damned", and who sung it anyway. So Shane decided it would have been nice to write a "Turkish Song of the Damned".
