This is the first chapter of Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, the most influential work to come out of the Protestant Reformation. This chapter is almost certainly the most famous chapter of the Institutes, and has served as a crucial passage for two of the major philosophical developments in Reformed thought in the 20th century: presuppositional apologetics and reformed epistemology.

In this chapter, Calvin gives the inescapable nature of the knowledge of God: that human beings, created in God's image, as finite and moral creatures cannot help but apprehend the existence of God in every moment of their self-consciousness.
