Sunday October 25 2009 was the second day of the CQ World Wide DX Contest for SSB (single sideband [voice] mode).

Uncle Steve took his ham radio to Jaycee Park in west Raleigh, North Carolina near where he lives.

This is a battery setup, an old Japan Radio tuner and a IC-706MKIIG transceiver.

The 20 meter band (14 MHz) antenna is four sections of fitted aluminum tubing from 1-1/4 down to 1/2 inch.

The vertical is mounted in a bracket on a five foot wooden "staff" anchored under the rear wheel of the car.

One side of the transmission line excites the vertical while the braid is attached to the body of the car.

There are plenty of ferrite chucks on the coax to prevent RF from radiating from the transmission line.

This is called a portable operation because it is away from home and the antenna set up does not allow the car to be driven away.

  • Been enjoying your fishing videos. And a fellow ham as well. Good fishing and good dx to you from KG6JGQ. I'm also in N. Carolina (a transplant from from California) living in Fayetteville.

  • @nealbfinn I'm a transplant from many places but happy to be a North Carolinian now. Ham radio early in life, fishing very late in life.

  • It's my CW style operation ... a station is calling CQ and he knows who he is. I may be one of many calling him plus noise (QRN) and interference (QRM).

If he responds to me, he will say my callsign. "roger roger" means: you have my callsign correct, and acknowledges the signal-report or exchange. Then I give him his signal report.

If he didn't get my full callsign, he would say so and give me a report.

If he got my callsign incorrectly close, I would have corrected it and given my report.

  • Uncle Steve, why do other operators mention your callsign but you don't repeat theirs? Thanks

  • Have not operated for 10 years and this has reminded me of hours of great portable and mobile operating including speaking to VR6TC from my car .... and he called me!! Hope I meet you on the bands. GW4ZAR.

  • Good video mate. Shows all you need to be is in the right place at the right time and you can talk half way round the world !

  • Real ham radio spirit, Thank you for the recording

    73's from Spain

  • I'm a little confused, is that the microphone in his hand or is the microphone that little black box on the table ? Then the Transmitter is part of the car and somehow the antenna is attached to the table? The video text got me confused.

  • Really cool video. Thanks!!

  • nice work
