Buck 65 3rd album was originally released on tape in 1998, it was re released on Warner in 2002.

Vertex was the first album i ever bought or listened to by Rich Terfry and it changed my life.

Vertex is a pretty simple and simultaneously complex listen. It was recorded DIY style straight to a 4 track recorder. It has a wonderfully understated brilliance to it. It oozes sincerity and ideas.

Buck 65 has a very soft spoken, stream of consciousness flow. Very honest and cerebral and poetic. This album overflows with creativity.

The beats are just some rare samples Buck has found during his countless hours of crate digging. they showcase a very wide range of sounds and inspirations. Lots of simple drum beats, mixed with Bucks own scratches that are sometimes coupled with video game sound effects, old ass synth sounds, funk guitars and on and on. It really knows no bounds.

If David Lynch produced a hip hop album, it would a lot like this. Buck is a good guy. I've met him and saw him several times live since this album. I love his older albums like this one. His new stuff is kinda disappointing, but he's made 6 wicked albums in a row, so he always a place in my heart.

Just for ideas and originality and life changing sound alone, I can give Vertex :

4.9/5

  • Yeah, Vertex has a similar jazzy / abstract feel as Lord Quas. This album was one of the last albums to change my life. It was in response to needledrops question of the week.

  • Enlightening! I'm going to give this a listen right away!

  • Let me know what you thought of it.
