I live in Los Angeles and the most likely disaster to strike will be a massive earthquake. Buildings and roads may collapse making cars and buses useless. Bicycles may be a great asset but most people will have to walk to get anywhere. That being said, I chose to use the "Mountainsmith Daypack" lumbar pack. because the load is off of my shoulders and primarily on my hips. A small pack means lighter, faster travel. This pack is equipped to get me back to my home where i have more equipment and supplies to help me survive a natural or "man made"catastrophe. The pack is not a tactical one; meaning I am perceived as less of a threat to gangsters, sheeple, and LEOs. Although it is a lumbar pack, it is equipped with dual shoulder straps to secure and lighten the load. i don't carry any food because of weight, space, and i don't need it for a very short time frame. Besides, i might find it possible to acquire some food along the way home. Nor do i carry cooking equipment for the same reason.
If weight is a concern, get rid of the toiletry bag. You said the bag is for short term use. You need food more than toothpaste if you are trying to walk home.

I would include $20-$50 in small bills and change. In emergencies, cash is king. People would charge $10 for a bottle of water. Also, you said you didn't include food because you figure you can buy some. I wouldn't count on that. I would at least include some hard candies or peanut butter crackers.

You might want to rethink having all that stuff hanging off your bag. It makes you a target. Also, you included a map but I didn't see a compass. A compass will make navigation easier when all the roads are messed up from the earthquake, especially at night. I would also include a whistle. In case you are trapped under rubble. Also, keep those water containers filled with water before disaster strikes. Cause you don't want to drink water from the LA river.

how did you affix your cold steel to the hip belt? I also have the DAY model, but I want to get the "backpack" straps, I find the single strap to move around too much. Although I tend to carry a bit more clothing because of the climate here in Utah is a bit cooler. I also keep my pistol hidden in the bladder pouch in the back. Great job!!
