The word Mega is thrown around a lot these days but as it relates to Louisvilles newest tourist attraction this description is quite appropriate. The Louisville MEGA Cavern takes up 4,000,000 square feet (over 100 acres) with over 17 miles of underground roadways. The MEGA Cavern is supported by 223 large stone pillars. The largest of these pillars takes nearly 4 minutes just to walk around.

The MEGA Cavern isnt just Louisvilles newest tourist attraction; its also the largest building in the state of Kentucky. Although underground, the highly functional space within the MEGA Cavern has been classified by the Metro Louisville government and the state of Kentucky as a building. This classification gives the MEGA Cavern the status of being the largest building in the state of Kentucky.

With its own building code, a portion of the MEGA Cavern is actually an environmentally-conscious, high security commercial storage facility. For the past 17 years, a massive amount of recycled concrete, brick, rock, block and dirt have been off-loaded into the cavern to fill in holes and create sub-floors and internal roadways within the MEGA Cavern.

Enough rock (primarily limestone) has been mined from the cavern that you could construct a highway 357 miles long!

The storage facility, and most of the MEGA Cavern for that matter, also utilizes the latest environmentally responsible and energy efficient practices to make this cavern green in many ways. So green; in fact, that the cavern is Kentuckys largest and most green building and the largest recycling center in the state.

Visitors to the new MEGA Cavern wont have to walk through this underground tour; guests will be pulled around on a fun, SUV-pulled tram. A 60-70 minute guided tour includes discussions about early cave formations, a replica of the Cuban Missile Crisis Fallout Bunker, a worm recycling/tasting room and much more. Visitors to the MEGA Cavern will always be comfortable as the underground location always stays at a constant 60 degrees.

The Louisville MEGA Cavern is located beneath the Louisville Zoo at 1841 Taylor Ave. For directions and additional information go to www.LouisvilleMEGACavern.com
