Some weeks later that very old man again felt sure of himself to play those Brahms- Variations. It would be, in my eyes, be even a great and solide job in studios production of a 50 year old...okay, he does not allow himself to dream and wait, but he performs straight und musically intelligent performed variations and holds the tension in every secound. Was it not Richter who said, this man was the best pianist of the world, not himself?

I rember to once owned the same recording with a preface written by an seemingly very competent person I do not remember the name of, but who was not only a fan of Giles but had visited many concerts enduirng of decades of this artist.
He explained, and i Try to summerize: Gilels was at the age of 75 or so when deciding spontanosly to perform this variations instead of Brahms Paganini which he did not feel sure for that evening! This niveau in a live-performance as an old man is magnificent!

Thank you very much for uploading!

A wonderful performance!

mediocre performance by Gilels. Richter is my favorite and Cherkassy plays this great as well.

Gilels will always be remembered for his golden tone (and the same for his counterpart, Cherkassky) and remains a supernova in the pianistic firmament....long may his spirit lives! sd goh (malaysia)

well, u know, Gilels never was my hero, of course, he has some magnificent recordings, but his piano style is not for me most.. Very often I find him too stiff when he plays... specially in romantic repertoire.

Thank you for posting this. A great interpretation of one of the piano giants of the last 100 years. Lisitsa plays this much faster, as does Ashkenazy. But much gets lost. The nobility and grandeur of Gilels's rendition is unrivalled. I had the honor of hearing Gilels play this piece in the early '80s in Munich. I will never forget that evening. Finally, I should note that I believe the comment below to be totally without foundation.

it's my turn ... my English is very (very, very !!) bad ... I'm really sorry. but I can explain a few little : Gilels is very great but here, he's very tired ... because he has given the better of himself in the previous variations, I think ... but Gilels remains Gilels !! forever ...
