Google I/O 2009 - The Myth of the Genius Programmer

Brian Fitzpatrick, Ben Collins-Sussman

A pervasive elitism hovers in the background of collaborative software development: everyone secretly wants to be seen as a genius. In this talk, we discuss how to avoid this trap and gracefully exchange personal ego for personal growth and super-charged collaboration. We'll also examine how software tools affect social behaviors, and how to successfully manage the growth of new ideas.

  • @dennis3380 - why don't you go suck his knob and get it over with. Zuckerberg isn't a "genius" programmer like the movie portrays......"32 hour coding tears".....please!!! He used simple php and database methods to create a website....not a big deal in terms of programming. The genius in Zuckerberg was not his pogramming skills, it was his way of taking ideas (...from others but I won't use the term "stealing" here) and combining them to create a useful SERVICE. You missed the whole point.

  • I love this talk!

  • @Ilikemustard Well sure, but games aren't really what they're talking about here. There have been loads of really successful games which have been made by just one or two people working very hard, but with huge software projects for commercial use (read: other companies will use them) the complexity is much, much higher.

This isn't to say games programming is easy, rather it's to say that games programming permits an environment in which the user interaction is more predictable.

  • @oskenso nope. Just the myth of the genius programmer case in point.
