And don't forget Hermann Hesse (of Steppenwolf, The Glass Bead Game, and Siddhartha fame), the author of the poem used as text by Herr Strauss.

You have to hear it to believe it. This performance would have given Strauss a woody. I know: how crude! But Jessye just brought me to the brink of extinction, I have fight back somehow. Too bad the first and last few seconds of this piece were chopped off.

I love the feeling she gives that she herself is transported, even transformed, by the beauty of the music.
