  • How about you try taking a pinch in the balls from duran and and still stand so dont call ken a pansie

  • Duran took the entire fight to Buchanan and Ken new his title was going and when the 'low blow' came he thought if he went down Duran would be disqualified. Very unprofessional of him. Ken was a great and stylish boxer but bear in mind all boxers wear a reinforced groin guard so if you get hit by a low blow your nuts are well protected.

  • @TrumanOThirsty CORRECTION: I should have said " Duran's WBA lgtwgt. title " as Duran did not win WBC title until defeating E. DeJesus in their 3rd bout. R Duran

won by TKO over E DeJesus and won the undisputed lightweight championship of the world in 1978. I apologize for the error.

  • @PerignonPop It's interesting to me that 2 of 3 cordial replies I received on boxing blogs were sent from the UK. IMO, for whatever reason, civility and courtesy in America have taken a sharp downturn in the past 25 years. This lower standard is reflected in lessened sportmanship in many of our pro athletes and a general decline in the quality of behavior seen in public. I remain hopeful that we Americans will regain our former, higher sense of fairness and respect for others. Regards.

  • @PerignonPop Duran lost to DeJesus& the NY State Athltc Com didn't recognize Duran's WBC lgtwgt. title for not fighting mandatory rematch w/Ken Buchanan by 6/30/73. Buchanan was a polished boxer w/few chinks in his armor (he w/cut in many bouts, but not his fault). If Duran had not come along, it is easy to imagine K Buchanan holding the title for a long time. In any case, please tell KB that this American admires him. I look forward to hearing the truth! Peace - Best wishes. (Mike,Belair,MD)

  • @PerignonPop I appreciate the answers conveyed in your replies. It is always refreshing to receive civil posts which are both informative and personable ( i receive too

few of this type). I am anxious to hear what Mr. Buchanan has to say. I read in SI that

Eleta 1st agreed to a rematch in Nov. 72. As before, an injury postponed that rematch

& was resheduled for June, 73. Here is where the storyline gets murky; Duran lost a 10 rd non- title fight which Duran lost by UD. To be continued :-).

  • @getarslim Dubious. Having boxed amateur (Leith Victoria B.C. and Doncaster, Vienna, Berlin and a few other gyms) the fact is that a power dig to the groin may not squash your seedbank, but it still hurts and nauseates. You do realise Buchanan needed testicular surgery afterwards? Yes, he was below par on the night, but he never personally saught to apportion blame now make excuses himself that this shot from Duran was the sole reason he was beaten. He's an honest man, No liar, for sure.

  • @IOWNYOURTURFNOW95 Absolute Ignoramus. You watch the whole batttle?

    A "shit fight"? No danger.

  • @SuperScottishkid Come on sunshine - don't lower yourself to that kind of bigoted comment. Ken himself would never say such a thing, so you should't either,

Really. Praise Ken- don't make racist digs like that. Please buddy. All the best pal. D.

  • @TrumanOThirsty ...genuine warm, human respect in both old fighters' eyes is as clear as day. There's even a joke (Ken to Roberto) about "below the belt action".

(it's available to see on this here somewhere, (youTube)

As I say - I'll ask Ken, but I think I;m not a million miles away from the truth in what I suggested. Peace brother - cheers for the exchange there. Good man.

As the motto of my hometown (and Ken's) goes - PERSEVERE. Keep on truckin'. Peace. Dominic (Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland.

  • @TrumanOThirsty (Sorry, more to add - they don't let you have enough space, sometimes!) The Duran corner/management felt that there were other more lucrative and winnable bouts in the offing and that for the US funding, advertising and TV dollars, Buchanan II would be a possibly daft choice. Too much to lose. To give Senor Duran his dues (there are many, he turned up unexpectedly at a Testimonial dinner for Ken (he's had some terrible financial difficulties) and the (sorry - out of space again!)

  • @TrumanOThirsty I'll see Ken in the next week or so i would imagine/hope and will ask him about this. I seem to recollect (off the top of the head, so don't quote me on this!) that Duran considered Buchanan THE toughest opponent he faced, bar none. He (Roberto) was up for a rematch (and felt it due to Ken) but his management felt it to be ill-advised. An awful lot to lose (not just a belt, but reputation, morale, desire, etcetera)
