Aluminum which is a common metal today was a rare metal over one hundred year ago. In 1886 an electrolitic method of aluminum ore (bauxite) reduction was developed.
actually, in the U.S., we call it "aluminum." Aluminum was one of the first designations for the metal, until the IUPAC decided to change the name to aluminium to reflect similarity in naming schemes to the other elements. of course, "aluminum" was so deeply seated with us that the ACS decided to revert back to aluminum, officially as of 1925.
Yeah, it's sexy. No wonder why US has only little bauxide on its territory. j/k haha.
