maybe under those circumstances it would be more horrible to watch the pilot burn alive thans to risk getting burned oneself -- some things a man just can't tolerate, instinctively -- plus, it might have been a friend - hard to know what one would do in that situation, but one can only hope we'd be so immediately brave

@58Vulcan I saw this sequence of photos in a book when I was about 10. The plane is a Grumman Martlett and had just crashed on the deck of the carrier. This guy ran up to the plane, climbed on the wing and got the pilot out despite the fire engulfing them both. His bravery stayed in my mind forever.
