I remember taking Mr Machine apart...couldn't get him back together...so I gave him a pounding headache with a hammer.

NICE TOY
I seem to remember mine whistled or whistled a tune.. am I remembering that correctly?

Yes, you are remembering it correctly! Ideal Toy Corporation made several variations. There is the original 1961 version (shown) which came with a wrench to use to take the M.M. apart and had a large metal key to wind him up. The 1977, 1983 and 1986 versions did whistle a tune and you weren't able to take him apart and the metal key was replaced with a blue plastic one. The tune he whistled was "This Old Man". Most collectors prefer the original version, which "squawked" instead of whistling.

I had a Mr Machine that I got as a kid for Christmas. I took that thing apart and put it back together over and over.
About 6 years back I bought one on eBay and was rather surprised to find I could take it apart.

Mr. Machine is a very cool toy. Most folks I have talked to said once they took it apart, they had trouble getting it back together and even their folks couldn't do it. I took mine apart to clean it and I followed the instructions. Thanks for viewing.

I've studied pictures of the original 60's model and with the exception of the yellowed main body the reissue looks just like it. I think pieces of the reissue would be compatible with the original if I bought an original with parts missing.

I've never seen the new reproduction Mr. Machine, but I assume the parts would fit. The yellowed plastic does give the original that "vintage" look. What prompted you to get the re-issue? Did you have a Mr. Machine as a kid? Happy Thanksgiving.
