  • What kind of sitar is that? They aren't normally that enormous, are they? Or is she just very small?

  • It's not a Sitar, but a Veena, the South Indian version aka Saraswathi Veena.

  • Thanks sprasadv.Will try.

  • I really enjoy her playing. Her music plays inside me,

  • She is not just a 'good musicians' !! Kalpagam Swaminathan is a guru of Prof. S Janakiram and possibly Tiger Varadachari !!! She is an authority on Veena and a former full professor at Kalakshetra...in the 30s....in those times, you don't get there unless you were an all-time great in your field!!

  • Sorry, I meant gAndhAra..

  • This is probably the person I love most of all.

  • @kumar1102 both gAndhAras you mean?

  • She is indeed the unquestionable authority on Dikshitar kritis.

This is the only version of mAnji with both madhyamas, that I've heard till date. MSS sings rAmachandrEna in shudha madhyama.

  • where does this grand lady live, would like to interview her...

  • some forms of veena r vichitra veena, rudra veena, gottuvadyam/chitra veena, etc. the Saraswati veena was perfected in the 18th century by the Tanjavur king, Raghunatha Nayak, bcoz of which its also called Raghunatha veena. around this time the sitar also emerged in the north, as a combination of the Indian veena & the persian rabaab

  • Veena is a Indian instrument, similar to the lute of the west. there have been veenas of various types through the ages - veenas made from various types of materials, of various shapes & sizes, with differing no. of strings & frets, and some even without frets at all.

  • She's very good. I've listened to a lot of her veena since before I could walk, and she's very good. My mother Nirmala Rajasekar is her disciple for mucho years. If you want to hear more stuff like this, search my mom.
