Riding a bicycle in Amsterdam by yourself may be a bit too challanging for an American unfamiliar with urban bicycling in The Netherlands. I would say not to attempt it because riding a bicycle in Amsterdam requires skills unknown in America.

I'm an American, and I rode a bicycle in Amsterdam with no problem. In fact I felt safer on a bike than I did walking.
