American riding bicycle near Leidseplein, Amsterdam

Riding a bicycle in Amsterdam by yourself may be a bit too challanging for an American unfamiliar with urban bicycling in The Netherlands. I would say not to attempt it because riding a bicycle in Amsterdam requires skills unknown in America.

Well, I can understand his point of view about not attempting to ride a bike: If you never rode a bike before, than doing so for the first time in Amsterdam is a bit too much: traffic from every way, other cyclists that don't signal which way they will make a turn...

That's because of the bike lanes, Holland is just about the only place where you find them

I'm an American, and I rode a bicycle in Amsterdam with no problem. In fact I felt safer on a bike than I did walking.
