  • In his 2006 book titled THE BEST and Worst of Thoroughbred Racing, author Steve Davidowitz of Daily Racing Form ranks Manila as the best long-distance turf horse in American racing history ahead of No.2, John Henry. He compiled a 12-3-0 record in the final 15 starts of his career and won nine consecutive races between June 7, 1986 and July 15, 1987.He won The United Nations Gr.1(twice)Early Times Gr.1,Arlington Million Gr.1,Turf Classic Gr.1, Breeders Cup Turf Gr.1, What a Horse!!!!!

  • well, I don't know if this makes it any straighter, but by then your logic Theatrical is also a better horse than Dancing Brave. Which ain't necessarily so, wouldn't you say?

  • lets get this straight, Manila is argueably the best grass horse of all time in America and Dancing Brave is argueably the best grass horse of all time in Europe, they both met and Manila won with a troubled trip, so that makes Manila the better horse right??? THE Best GRASS Horse in the world in 1987 and maybe of all time!!!

  • Manila was a freak!!

  • They don't like risking them on grass. Our European horses are different.

  • Americans don't bring flat horse to GB.

  • Dancing Brave was the best in Europe by a mile in a long time bar Miesque but he certainly was not the best. He would have met his match against either Brigadier Gerard who was the secreteriat of his day in Europe but for me much better he nly lost 1 of 18 starts from 2 to 4 years over distances 6 to 12 ferlongs or for you sad yanks sprint to marathon distances and virtually all at grade 1 level and among his victims Mill Reef a totally supream Champion.

  • DB was effectively nobbled by being shut away in a quarantine barn for days in conditions that were little short of barbaric. Sporting Americans felt that US racing authorities were inhospitable - even unsporting - in order to protect Manila's reputation.
