Sorry the video is a bit dark...but alas I did the best I could with what I have. :)
**I dont know if this will work for everyone; there could be a myriad of other reasons. This post is in case these tips/tricks I found work for others like it had mine...**
After scouring the net I found a few tips and tricks to get my new iphone 3g working. Its on 3.1.3 firmware. I hope this helps others.
No matter what SIM card I placed in the phone, I kept receiving the same error.
It seems the housing of some Iphones for the SIM tray is not very secure. When you insert your SIM card, youll notice the SIM gets pushed up. However the SIM needs to stay fit in the SIM tray, and the card needs to be as low as possible. The second thing is I believe there is too much of a gap between the SIM card and the contacts in the phone.
Trick 1: Tape the SIM card to the bottom part of the SIM tray. Do not get the tape on the back of the SIM card. The tape not only will hold the card in place, but provide extra pressure pushing the card towards the contacts.
NOTE: however you do this at your own risk. The process of removing and inserting a card taped to a SIM tray causes the tape to catch and bunch up, eventually shred. If pieces of tape break off and fall in your phone, they could land somewhere that prevents a connection from being made.
Trick 2: Although the SIM tray looks flush and pushed all the way in in the top of your phone, still press very firmly on the top of it, and you should notice the phone recognize theres a SIM.
I noticed that if I pressed on the front top center of the phone, I could cause the problem to re-occur; I dont recommend doing this often, it could damage touch censors in the LCD. After adding the tape and pressing the top of the SIM tray as firmly down as possible it seems to stop it from re-occuring.
Once you have your card in and the phone recognizes it, you can now get Itunes to recognize and activate your phone if you have not yet.
If you now see "no service", "searching" or solid lines; go into your settings and turn on airplane mode, then turn it back off. I have read this trick worked for others, but it did not work for me. However, a simple reboot did the job.
mine dosnt read at alll... can i take it to apple?

@alianddrew2 you can always take it to apple, it just depends if you are still covered under warranty whether its free or for a charge.
if they are going to charge you an exhorbinent amount... you can try and sell it as for parts/repair on ebay, and use the money from that to buy another phone. And if you are under a phone contract thats ready to renew you can see the upgrade options.. you might be able to ultimately end up replacing the whole thing for free..

@Jonathanadams2012 ...which is why I did the tape. If you did the tape, and you have to press firmly when putting on the tape so theres no room for the sim to move around...and its a temporary fix.. if that fails I think you just have to get it repaired.. or sell on ebay and buy another..
