After a few days of "clicker conditioning" Duke, this was the first training session with a target stick. The bird must touch the end of the target stick, then a click, then a reward. The budgie learns that touching the target stick earns a treat, and as a result, the bird can be led to go in places that they may not want to go, or are too afraid to go, otherwise, in order to touch the stick.

  • My bird does not get this. its been three days and i'm trying to be paitent enough... but i'm afraid i might be confusing her. any tips or suggestions please? i'll try anything :) and Duke is adorable!

  • @TinyLightning23 Go the theparrotforum (link is in more info), then to "Taming & Basic Training" section. Then find the second article from the top called "How to Teach Parrot to Step Up and to Come Out of Cage." That should give you a lot more information and tools to use than the extent of just this video. Sorry, youtube doesn't let me post the link directly so that's the way you have to go to get to the article.

  • Can duke talk??? If so will you make a videos of him talking?

  • Nope, Duke doesn't talk yet. He's only seven months old. Kili does though so you can check out some of her vocalization videos. She says hello, look at me, pretty bird, does a kissing sound, and cat call.

  • Just put the stick really close to its face and keep it there and wait for it to touch it. You may have to wait a minute or 5 or 10. But when it touches you click and reward. Soon it will catch on and do it more often. You can also try touching the stick to the birds beak and rewarding it to show it what it can get.

  • I'm teaching my cockatiel to do touch target training. Where do you get those clickers btw? I use a safe pop up bottle lid thingy thing

  • You can get them at a pet store or online. They are sometimes used for dog training so it might not be in a bird section. They're great for letting your bird know when it does something right.

  • @kiliparrot is his wings clipped? And I got mine a week ago all he does is sits there in his cage he doesn't fly around his cage but can step up well. And if I buy him toys will he be more active? And I let him out of his cage once, but he just flys to the highest corner and sits and doesn't step up when hes out of the cage.
