As a musician (guitar, keyboards, drums, etc) I've compared songs written for both groups, and Morning Musume's stuff is vastly more advanced in terms of music theory, plus they have way more variety in styles. Compare the music of "Takara no Hako" to the music of "Love Machine" and "Namida ga Tomaranai Houkago" -- it's like Tsunku is a genius! English-speaking nations in particular haven't had a truly good Top 40 girl group songwriter for over 25 years.. :(
