I love this record! Ray is a music legend for his comedy recordings but he could sing a serious tune when he needed to. Many of his B sides were serious songs, and this is one of them. This is likely his rarest Mercury 45, sometimes it can be found for under $20 but consider yourself lucky to spend under $40 for it. I was first introduced to this record through Dave The Rave's Relics And Rareties show on Topshelf Oldies, and kept a lookout for the 45 until one turned up. It took a year and a half but I finally got a copy of it and am pleased to share it with the world. Unfortunately this song will likely never be reissued since Universal can't seem to do a decent compilation of Ray's entire Mercury records output. If they did, I certainly would buy it and encourage others to buy it as well. Songs like this should not be locked away in a vault waiting for the next big fire to destroy them! Keep the music alive! You can hear great tunes like this one live every night on www.topshelfoldies.com!

  • I note that this record is also co-wrotten by Bob Tubert, who i know very little about... he co-wrote some other tunes i like by other artists, but i know nothing else of him, or if he's even still alive.

  • Ray Stevens is one of the best singers alive

  • It's high time that these songs get a decent CD release! Bear Family and Rhino are the most likely candidates. But who could afford those sets?

  • Ray and Bob Tubert also wrote the "Say Cheese" song on Ray's 1968 album titled Even Stevens. The two also wrote a song called "Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion".

  • has a unique sound
