The Law Officer's Guide to Bicycle Safety
Welcome and Overview
Welcome to the Law Officer's Guide to Bicycle Safety. In 2002, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded a grant to MassBike to develop a national program to educate police departments about laws relating to bicyclists. Initial seed money for the project was provided by the Charles River Wheelmen. The program is intended to be taught by law enforcement officers to law enforcement officers as a stand-alone resource. The major objective of the program is to give law enforcement officers of all backgrounds the tools they need to properly enforce the laws that affect bicyclists. The program focuses on all police officers, including those who may not be interested in bicycling or who are not able to attend in-depth trainings. The program will also be useful to police departments who wish to do outreach to the bicycle community or other organizations.
NHTSA is currently restructuring the program so that police can receive continuing education credit for completing it. The materials MassBike developed are available here for free downloading by interested citizens, officers, and advocacy groups.

Unrealistic. I've ridden on the sidewalk since I learned how to ride a bike, and haven't gotten into a single accident. I have a friend, who was on the road and got hit by a car, who left him there unconscious with a broken leg.

Legalized biking on a sidewalk! Only retard not fearing for his safety bike like that on a sidewalk. Its good to have both sidewalk and road and let the cyclist decide which one is safer for him. And you don't have to be athletic build to bike on sidewalk that is required on the road. I carry heavy package on my bike often times I am slow moving a much better pace on sidewalk. If I do go into a road thats because sidewalk is full of pedestrian etc. Give us back our choices!!

This is stupid. You don't ride without pedestrians in mind. You do it defensively when you're on the sidewalk. The person in the first scenario just rode right through without swerving which would never happen, and in the second, the person would have TOTALLY seen the car coming to the intersection and could have stopped. Not a convincing video at all.

But Boston-area cyclists ride on the sidewalks in business districts all the time and public safety be damned!
And cyclists want respect?

traffic and is violation of the law and is $100 fine.
If the cop can get his lazy ass out of the car.
One day the city will realize it as another source of income to help keep the taxies down. So there is hope.
