In this amusing film made in the 1960's, Alan Whicker visits South Wales to report on how a poor potato crop could spell disaster for the Fish & Chip shops upon which the national economy rests. Whicker interviews writer and broacater Gwyn Thomas who explains the importance of the humble chip on the Welsh national identity.
People forget that until the 80s when VAT was put on take-away food, fish & chips was a very cheap food. Back in the 60s South Wales was still very industrial and when you work in a mine or steel works you need something substantial to eat.

The eater of a chip out of the Times was obviously a lucky, and a more informed, chip eater. Cricket scores especially, around the World.

The chip is full of Vitamin C and potassium, you forgot to mention Gwyn - potassium which counter-attacks the salt. And the fish, well what can you say, full of sea goodness and omega-3's - good for the brain and minds-eyes, I have been told....
