Everest - 1st Ascent Without Oxygen

Climbing Mt. Everest without (bottled) oxygen. Sometime between 1 and 2 in the afternoon on May 8, 1978, Messner and Habeler achieved what was believed to be impossible — the first ascent of Mt. Everest without oxygen.

Now a comment on this video. It consists of parts from the documentary ''Everest Unmasked''. In the documentary, the real dangers of this attempt are presented. Moving glacier, avalanches and serious health problems because of the low oxygen. To deal (to some extent) with the latter, extremely good physical fitness is undoubtedly needed in order to reduce the time exposed to the (very) low oxygen and not only. Now about the other matter, yes Kammerlander has done an ascent on Everest without supplemental oxygen and he set a record in 1996. Dont know if the record still holds. "In 1996 Kammerlander climbed Everest in the record time of 23,5 hours, base-camp and back. The descent was partly done on ski."

I can remember watching a National Geographic programme about Snapes amazing climb of Everest from sea level.

An amazing journey that is still hard to visualise and comprehend in its overall difficulty.
