They are two totally different styles, not really subject to comparison.

And yes we all know Emerson is more original than Rudess (probably one of the most original) but his music is different from Rudess'.

And yes ELP is better than Dream Theater, but even though I respect Dream Theater more, I sure like their music more.

But Emerson still wins.

Oh and last thing, Dream Theater is neither commercial, nor shitty.

emerson and ELP are big influences to jordan and DT.... they have all said it on a number of occasions... completely diff styles, diff music eras... You Can not, and should not compare the two.

Very poor mixing of the two men. Emerson is a genius and individuality. Jordan Rudess does not represent any artistic value. He must be forgotten....

Rudess is obviously superior to Emerson in every aspect, Keith isnt even in the same league; A better comparision would be Rick Wakeman to Rudess as their playing styles are alot more similat.

Well, it's hard to be objective being an ELP fan, but I think Emerson is better technically than Rudess, and far far better as a composer than him too. They're obviously both great musicians, but I think Emerson is better in every way.

@WestonMossman  I agree about them being two completely different styles. They were in completely different eras of the progression of rock music. Keith Emerson introduced the Moog Synth. to the world. Robert Moog who designed it was very closely with KE and the first time you hear the use of his synthesizer, it was by KE.

I think we left out Rick Wakeman. He also contributed to the progression of the use of keyboard dominated rock music, though Steve Howe had a hand in the mix on guitar.

@mitsubachi2 I know very well that Rudess is an immense musicians,in fact I'm studying his great keys method

But he hasn't record nothing comparable to Tarkus or Trilogy or Brian salad surgery

Jordan is better than Emerson technically but he is too obsessed in making his keyboards sounding as guitars unfortunately

His last cd is a masterpiece but is a cover album of classic tracks of Genesis ELP etc

He should create something different from Dream Theater in order to let his footprint

Jordan Rudess è grande tecnicamente ma non ha scritto un singolo pezzo paragonabile a ciò che hanno fatto ELP.

Infatti l'ultimo suo cd (fantastico tra l'altro) sono cover dei grandi immensi classici del rock "tastierizzato"

@margix I totally agree with you in saying that without Emerson, there would be no Rudess, but saying that Rudess is poor musically is not by any means true. I can see how you may have developed this opinion simply from hearing some of his wanky solos in Dream Theater, but many of his Dream Theater solos are poor representations of his compositional and musical aptitude. I will restate that the Rudess solo displayed here is not even 10% of what he is capable of musically.

Keith Emerson of course! Well, right now, because of Keith's right hand problems, Jordan is playing better. BUT, when Keith was young, he played a lot better than Rudess now! But both of them are great and they're playing different styles, so it's hard to compare them. But, I think Emerson is a lot better musician. He wrote so many things. Not only ELP songs, but a Concerto, etc, etc. Of course Jordan composed a lot of his things too, but I think that Emerson's work i s more original.
