Not a quirk, but a deliberate thing uploaders do to allow them to choose what frame people see in the preview image.

It actually isn't a subliminal thing - it's a copy of the picture that later comes up later in the video. YouTube only lets you pick from one of three still for the preview, but the frames are predictable - so if you embed a still frame in just the right place in the video, you can use that as the preview.
