My late grandad was not the greatest cinematographer in the world! I've edited this down from his ciné film of an old folk's outing to Paington in 1973. I think it's safe to say all the people on this trip departed this earth many years ago! My gran is the lady in the blue headscarf that keeps cropping up. If anyone's viewing this who goes there regularly, or lives there, I'd love to know what's changed.

  • Thanks, I worked as deck hand on the Dart Princess. And I think that was a mate of mine dancing on the beach. Good to see it,Twas 16 then ,now 54 and still messin with boats in a Land Down Under, good on yer

  • @jackofalltrades57 That would be great if so. My grandfather was very much of the old school; he was born in 1900 and fought in WW1. The whole 'youth' thing, even in the 1950s, bemused/amused him greatly. According to my mum, he filmed the guy on the beach because it was something unusual in his eyes. That kind of exhibitionism was just alien to him; something you'd just see on TV. How times change, eh?!

  • Hi, lovely film, had me grinning from ear to ear! I live in Devon & Paignton's changed a bit but the harbour's not too different. When the people get on a train early in the film they go to Dartmouth, The ?policewoman is in that town, as are the building tops.

  • @PrematureCDodger Smashing - thank you! I'd always assumed that extra footage at the start was filmed from the coach, actually (I cut off the first two minutes which was just my grandad's film of all these pensioners - no doubt all dead for decades now! - getting on the coach, presumably from where they set off in Surrey). My grandad, bless him, was not the world's greatest cinematographer.

  • JUST HAS I REMEBER THIS PAIGNTON

  • Is it still like this now? I've never been.

  • Oh, don't get hung up on your perceived state of the cinematography - my mother used to pan at 100mph(!) but what the heck! These cine films are often an important reminder of times past, and thank you so much for posting this one. I don't usually have the time to browse Youtube but I'm pleased to have seen this clip. Incidentally some of those Dartmouth buildings may well be among those badly damaged by a big fire last summer. x
