Emerson Lake & Palmer - The Barbarian - Live at the Isle Of Wright 1970

Set List for the Night:

01 - The Barbarian
02 - Take a Pebble
03 - Pictures at an Exhibition
04 - Rondo
05 - Nutrocker

An Interesting Story behind the band and this Concert:

In 1970 Before settling on Carl Palmer, ELP approached Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience; Mitchell was uninterested but passed the idea to Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix, wanting to try something different, expressed an interest in playing with the group. The British press, after hearing about this, speculated that such a supergroup would have been called HELP, or "Hendrix, Emerson, Lake & Palmer". Due to scheduling conflicts, such plans were not immediately realised, but the initial three planned a jam session with Hendrix after their second concert at the Isle of Wight Festival (their debut being in Plymouth Guildhall six days earlier), with the possibility of him joining. Hendrix died shortly thereafter, so the three pressed on as Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

  • Had to give this a rating just for the picture alone :-)

  • To think that some drummers on youtube think that Palmer is not a great drummer just because he has incredible chops then he's not musical: Ha; listen to about 1:45 to 1:50. Emesrson, who is a superb musician comes in half a beat late and Palmer picks it up so quickly he moves his hi-hat foot imediately to get back on track. It is Palmer who makes it sound seemless and the youngest one in the group at the time (19 years old); What ears. And forget about the drum fills at the end. Holy smoke!

  • anyone else agree that the beginning is a little black sabbath-esque?

  • @spercoco Absolutely. Palmer often saves both Emerson & Lake by adjusting his timing to them. And then some dingdong will comment, "Palmer's timing is off, listen to 6:37 blahblah..." When they're too dim to catch what was really off. ELP is almost flawless anyway, which is mindblowing. The sheer mathematics, which have to be innate to them all, shows genius.

  • @RottenAnatomy YEAH!! THAT is what got me into ELP!! Sounds stupid...cause the rest of the entire package is SUPERIOR! But it took a drunken night at a good friend's house to play this on his vinyl player to open my eyes! (ears)

  • @nerak48enterprise Hahaha!...You sound really pissed off (and rightly so). Ravenite1 is from your homeland, USA....I have also heard some Americans pronounce Wimbledon as 'WimbleTON'...poor dears!

  • you're RIGHT, it's Wight ~ WIGHT WIGHT WIGHT

and it's the WHITE Cliffs of Dover, not the WIGHT Cliffs of Dover, which I have seen posted incorrectly elsewhere.

  • Excuse me, but I think you mean 'Isle of Wight'....sorry to be so picky. Good video though...sounds great and I like that photo.

  • @spercoco You're right. Great save by Carl at 1:45. Hard to believe anyone wouldn't acknowledge how talented he is. Best drummer since Buddy Rich in my opinion
