David Essex - Godspell - God Save The People

1971..David went to an audition for the London production of the musical "Godspell" and was chosen from 2,000 candidates by enthusiastic US producers for the role of Jesus - which shot him to fame. For this show he received two major awards and some ecstatic reviews. Harold Hobson of "The Sunday Times" compared his performance with the Christs of El Greco and Rubens and declared it "the best in London". At the Roundhouse, and for two years in the West End at Wyndham's, David led a cast among who were Jeremy Irons, Julie Covington and Marti Webb.

The first time I saw Godspell, I was on duty with St. John's Ambulance (this was before I got the evening job at Wyndhams in addition to my day job). Your dad was playing the lead while David was filming 'That'll be the Day.' Your dad was great!

The master tapes/recordings were lost. It was back in the 70s after all. Check eBay, they usually have the original cast recording every so often.
