In the book and in the later TV version it was Mrs. Lynde and not Mrs. Barry who insulted Anne.

@angelateeng No I don't think the producers misunderstood the book, you have to take into account this was in the 1930's, and money was scarce for budgetting. Plus they had to fit an entire book into 2 hours, or however long it was, instead of stretching it out into 5 like the 1985 movie was. Considering what they had to work with, I think they did a good job.
