why not built a wood burner that can run on shredded wood chips
i could just rent a shredder at home depot and after one day i would have enough shredded chips to fire my house a hole winter
oh right somebody wants to make money selling pelletsmills or pellets

I forgot something:
a) the Janfire NH is designed to swallow not only good quality wood pellets but also low quality pellets.
b) it is intended to burn the waste products of the wood industry

Wood pellet is big in parts of the USA, Scandinavia, Austria and Italy. Not so great here in UK cause oil and gas is still relatively cheap. Our experience here is retrofitting is a bad idea. Pellets high in salts rot normal boilers in no time. Sawdust is in short supply right now because of the lack of construction work, and future power station consumption of timber is going to make domestic pellet expensive in certain areas.

It is a Janfire 23kw burner. Problem with retrofits to oil boilers are the small size of the combustion chamber and lack of flue draft. Converting a solid fuel boiler is probably a better bet.

Where space is at a premium the pellet burner is better because the mechanism to feed the pellets is lighter than for irregular shaped woodchips. In my case I'm building a steamcar and pellets give a more consistent burn. I agree about chips being cheaper but they don't suit this project.

This looks like the Janfire NH burner. Pellets or not is a much more basic question: Do you want to keep using non-renewable resources? The problme with the flue draft has been solved with the use of a fan and some systems can indeed be retrofitted. The most important thing however is to find a supplier that knows what he's talking about. This is a completely different technology and most installers have NO idea when it comes to pellet burners... I wouldn't want to miss mine!

Most UK oil fired boilers have only a short horizontal flue. If the burner is changed to pellet, I believe building regulations require installation of a full specification solid fuel vertical flue. Our government hasn't got to grips with the difference between burning logs and burning pellets.
