Primary coil is a bifilar wound vortex coil (with two parallel strands of magnet wire wound in one go)
120 notches, stepping 29.
More about basic vortex coil winding patterns here:

The two strands of these parallel winding are wired to a 2n2222 transistor in joulthief fashion, so that the transitor oscillates.
The "joulethief LED" is on the breadboard, between emitter and collector of the transistor.
See basic joulthief schematic at:

The secondary is a bifilar wound helical coil. Only one strand of the two is used to light the load: 6 LEDs connected in parallel.
Power supply is a depleted AA battery supliying less than 0.5V under load (sorry for the bad lighting while measuring the voltage).
The AC at the LEDs can not be properly measured with my cheap digital multi meter, but an analog meter will register it.
What a very interesting waveform....
I know the video is old... but would you mind doing an explanation of what is happening to the wave as it carries on through the cycle?

amazing to see polarised output from secondary winding ...guess this is why LED's only light one way. Another string of different color could be used on reverse polarity. Great vid thanks!
