Isitshwala is Southern African cooked pulverized grain meal that is the staple food in Zimbabwe. This food is cooked widely in other countries of the region. Isitshwala in appearance is a thickened porridge. The most common form of isitshwala is made with white maize (Mealie-Meal). This maize meal is referred to as impuphu in Ndebele.
Isitshwala is usually served in a communal pot and is taken with the right hand, rolled into balls, and dipped into sauce, gravy, or stewed vegetables.

  • This is exactly what I had been looking for the past several days. I have been trying to make ugali following recipes that I found on the internet, and I think I have figured out what I had done wrong before. For those who are not familiar with it, it appears that that wooden spoon is a very important tool. They don't make plastic or metal spoons strong enough for this. My one question at this point is whether it is at all sticky when you do it right.
