I think the music went to shit is just a reflection of society going to shit. We live in an iWorld, kids are brought up in an almost anti-creative environment and early on learn to repeat back facts, and are marketed to. When you spend your life in front of a screen and being different is treated as a disibility this is what happens to the music. The majority of mainstream music is marketed to appeal to kids because they'll spend the most money on it. Welcome to machine my friends.
