Young baritone Martin Hughes, born in Chicago in 1989, is heard in a voice recital sponsored by opera singer and teacher Maria D'Albert. Hughes began private voice lessons at age 10 and, within a few years, performed in concert at such local venues as Sherwood Conservatory of Music and at Curtiss Hall in the Fine Arts Building. As a student at Lincoln Park High School, he received Honors Superior for his interpretation of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams The Vagabond in 2004 and was chosen for the leading role, as Professor Harold Hill, in Meredith Willsons stage musical The Music Man in 2006. Hughes also was a member of the Lincoln Park Singers, the Lincoln Park Barbershop Quartet, and the Lincoln Park Madrigal Ensemble. Meanwhile, starting at age 6, he had started appearing in various TV commercials, including McDonalds and United Airlines, and joined the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). In 2001, Hughes was in Stolen Summer, the finished film of the acclaimed HBO documentary series Project Greenlight. Presently he is pursuing an undergraduate degree at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, where he is focusing on music and voice education.
