Quick comparison of two of the reverb modes on both pedals. Both pedals are digital and offer some good sounds. In my opinion one pedal is not better than the other as they both do different things well.

1. Boss RV5 set to "modulate"
2. Hardwire RV7 set to "modulate"
3. Boss RV5 set to "Hall"
4. Hardwire RV7 set to "Hall"

some specs:
Both pedals cost $149.99
Both pedals offer mod, hall, room, gate, plate, and spring settings but the hardwire offers an additional mode called"reverse".
Both pedals can be powered by a 9 volt battery or an ac adaptor

My opinion:
The boss sounds better on the modulate mode (more lush, better chorusing effect) and Hall modes.
The Hardwire sounds better on the "gated" mode, and has a mode that the boss does not called "reverse" which is very cool.
The hardwire (at least mine) suffers from some sort of smearing of modes that are near each other on the dial, for example the hall mode seems to generate a very light modulation effect, and the gated mode seems to do a very slight reverse effect. The boss pedal does not suffer from this malady. All-in-all, I enjoy each pedal for different things and use both alot.

NOTE*
Both pedals had the same settings for all modes. Levels were maxed, tone/liveliness controls were rolled back to almost 0 and decay time was maxed. I would've done more but my camera ran out of memory.

  • so the rv7 is definatly more subtle right? every video i've seen of it in the mod. mode it's more basic and subtle sounding that the rv-5 rather than being rediculously lush.

  • @youknowyourrite1 The RV5 is nice and lush. The difference in the mod modes between the two is that the rv7 sounds as if it is flanging rather than chorusing-lushness aside.

  • Excellent video, you should now compare Boss RV-5's modulated mode vs Line 6 Verbzilla's Cave Mode

  • @mewsic156 I would love to-care to send me a verbzilla?

  • Thanks for the vid! It's actually the two only modes I use on my RV-5. I thought about replacing it with something more suitable for bass, because it's just too bright, and you cannot really roll off the hi's on early reflections with the tone knob (just on the reverb tail). It pulls out all the metal from the strings and brings to the front even with the darkest settings. RV-7's Hall is great, really. But, alas, it has nothing comparable with RV-5's Modulate mode. This video clearly shows that.

  • @scorpguitar79 oh i know the rv-5 is lush like a symphony on the mod. mode. the rv7 to me, doesn't seem nearly as lush(or at least in the videos i've seen) but i want the lushness. i guess i'll give the rv7 a go for the hell of it the next time i get a chance and see for myself.

  • @mewsic156 The octo mode of the verbzilla is good, but I don't need it, so I got the RV5.

  • One of the reasons I got the RV-7 was because the reverse reverb bleeds into the gated reverb.

  • Thank you very much, this video made me to buy boss rv-5, greetings from argentina

  • nice... great sounds from those pedals :)
