This art was our cover art for issue 71. This video by Genzoman accompanies a step by step workshop featured in ImagineFX magazine in the same issue. He reveals how he brings manga to life with colour.

  • I like the fact that it is not speed up. As a fellow digital artist (still in formation) I am really glad to be able to see and understand the full process of the making os this kind of picture.

  • great job ...thanks

  • does anybody know how old this guy is?

  • i diont get the way he does it with this fade thing...(at skin)

  • @xAeMaeth I can't say for sure - I wish he'd show more of how his brushes were made. I heard that on the disc of this issue, the brushes and artwork are included, but I can't find a download (or even the magazine) so I can see for myself. I keep the spacing at zero, though. Also, the smudging isn't always that smooth - if you look at areas like the lower parts of her breasts or the crook of her right leg, it's not TOTALLY smooth. I dunno. If you find anything out, let me know!

  • @BeatsFromDP Thanks for the tips, however im still struggling trying to get the same smooth mid tones for clothing and what not. I've created my own tripod brush however this smudging brush only really works on the jagged shadows of the hair. I'm super frustrated now because i just cannot get the smoothness i wanted.. Is there a specific preset for the brush? I've changed the spacing and thats about it

  • GREAT!!! XDDD

  • @TJEYkorea It's okay to take TEN hours on a picture. Don't let other people dictate how long it should take, because half of the people who say "I did this in an hour" are just blowhards. The other half might be just that good, but the point is to have fun and learn as you go along. The minute you start doing it just to meet someone ELSE'S standards is the minute it stops becoming fun.

  • @xAeMaeth Sure it does! :) The proof is in the video since he does it himself. I'm actually trying out some of the techniques I've learned in this video, and it takes some practice, but it helps if you have the strength up around 70-75%. Also, you'll notice that he will sometimes smudge in a perpendicular direction to bring SOME of the color out into another color, then smudge parallel to blend the two. Keep in mind he's been doing it a while, so it takes some getting used to!

  • @BeatsFromDP Do you know whether that method actually works? I mean the smudge tool is okay to use but not good for contrasting or mutiple colours, im trying to achieve the same smooth midtone effect

  • It's really reassuring to see that it's okay to take 3 hours on a picture and it doesn't have to be done quickly to be good :) Thanks for the upload!
