As the title says:

AF-S = Auto Focus Silent
VR = Vibration Reduction
G = No aperture ring. The aperture only works on cameras newer arround 1993 models.
IF = Internal Focus (this helps and improves the focus)
ED = Extralow Dispersion is technology for glasses.

I choose this model just because the Internal Focus, but whatever model you choose the VR and AF funcion are basic and of course so helpful: its tech to approach!

@MrDugong78 it must be compatible - you can choose whatever lens with AF function and VR function is very recommend :D

@MrDugong78 Yes, use it... even there are other nikkor lens AF with nice Zoom .

whatever lens you choose: 300mm, 18 mm.. etc... the AF function and the VR function are recommended, . about AF lens they work with d3100, nikon lens and nikon cameras are compatible the difference is when the camera has AF function and the lens does not.

or when the lens has all the new functions but the camera is older without matching properly with the new lens.

@rres2 I tested the 80-200, its good, I like it even I tried buy one before the 70-300

iF you don't care about the relative-high price- of this 70-300 GET IT, the features work so good. I'm very satisfiedcheck my photo examples in antagonixDOTcom -- there's a 55-300 arroun 400 USD maybe you will like it, its just you check your camera compatibles. :))

@ScofieldNakamuraTV Believe me- after reviews and reviews and comments I decided this for this one. its excellent. -check my website (link in my profile) and you will see examples of photos. the AF works so good because its AF-S model: Auto Focus "Silent". Consider: AF lens will focus good in the Nikon D5000, VR function helps a lot so good! even I tried moon photos and it works ! but: illumination, ISO, and Aperture Value will influence in the focus performance, also the Metering setup.
