Although Victor Young is credited with the score to The Quiet Man ,He used an extensive amount of traditional Irish music throughout the film, most notably the Richard Farrelly penned '' Isle of Innisfree'. So on the 60th. anniversary of the movie, I thought this might be a timely tribute.

  • These Irish tunes are so sweet. Another song, and favorite of dir. Ford, though not actually an Irish song (written by an American), is "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen." Ford liked this song so much he used it in several films. Young himself is for some reason underrated and underrepresented in the catalogue. But SAMSON AND DELILAH is a gorgeous epic score; AROUND THE WORLD is a masterpiece; SHANE is timeless; THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH has a great title theme; & he wrote great songs too.

In my opinion Victor Young was perhaps the greatest songwriter of the 20th century. As a film composer he has been grossly under represented on disc until recently, people seem to be appreciating his contribution to film more these days. Along with the titles you have mentioned, I have to add Scaramouche, The Tall Men and Bright Leaf among my favourites.

  • Agreed, made in a more innocent era, it still retains it`s charm.

  • @Valdez244 Glad u apprec. Y, but I think he was far from the greatest songwriter of the cent that gave us Porter, Berlin, Youmans, Rodgers, Arlen, Kern! Maybe u meant among FILM composers, which may b true. Don't forget Medic theme & t subdued love theme from LEFT HAND OF GOD is 1 of his great melodies. AROUND THE WORLD's theme is so pure it almost sounds common, like Mozart! Always thought it a pity no one had the sense to set it to lyrics & sing it in the film! Almost sure to win >
