Demonstration of NavIt ( http://navit-project.org ) giving me driving instructions, at the same time that Rhythmbox is playing music. The announcements are speech synthesis done by espeak in French (English subtitles are available on this video), and an additional "attention-grabbing beep" is played before announcements.

Pardon my very shaky hand, I was trying to cope with my horrible driving skills, you see :)

  • cool! i'm going to put this on my eee pc. do you have to install Ubuntu first?

  • Navit can run on Windows, Linux (ie: Ubuntu), Mac OS X and various handheld devices. You'll have to check the wiki for instructions on that.

  • Nice. :)

I was driving around in my car today, using same system.

navit with espeak on my eeepc with EasyPeasy (ubuntu), but i hav a problem, when other programms like kaffeine or totem are playing sounds, navit hangs, coz of espeak cant play sounds...

    any suggestions?

  • Try installing alsa-oss and using "aoss espeak blahblahblah".

  • next question, how did u do this nice attention beep?

  • Oops, sorry, did not see your second question. I did this by using "aplay thepathtothesoundfile" before the command. So my command looks like "aplay the-beep && aoss espeak blahblahblah"
