  • "Stood down" or not, I hope ROC groups and their members continue to pass on their knowledge. We still live in the nuclear age, even if the "cold war" is over. We still need civil defense.

  • @Aerozine50 We need them stateside too. The U.S. relies too heavily on FEMA and whatever local emergency management the cities and towns can scrape together. Civil defense is everyone's responsibility.

  • 4.28 the debt collector. Hope the entire soviet arsenal fell on her post. Probably survive just like cockroaches. Same thing.

  • @DarkAngel182 Sadly our 4 Group HQ was demolished, though my old post at Bacton still survives!

  • @rocshr36 Nope, all I got was a call from my post chief telling me that we'd been stood down. I thought he was on a wind up, but eventually he convinced me it was true! :-(

  • i was at 30 post in dshropshire

  • you didn't read the leaflets they were dropping from aircraft

  • I was only a little kid when and living over in Canada when the ROC shut down and I only heard of it last year when I came across Sound An Alarm on youtube. I did a research paper on the ROC (check out ROCA newsletter no. 55 July 2008 i think). I had a dream i was in a huge training camp for new observers. Seeing this video made me wish the ROC was still around so I could go sign up lol

  • I served from 1980 until stand down just missing out on my 12 years service, our post still survives & is preseved by the crew as a cold war museum.

12 Group (Bristol) 67 post ex Yeovil 9 Group 21 post.

The crews still meet monthly in a local club & on the post in the summer to maintain it and show visitors around.

I still beleive the emergency services or technology cannot replace the corps.

  • I conceived, wrote and storyboarded this film, then supervised the film crew during filming. It was filmed between Jan - July 1991 and was planned as a recruiting film.

With the stand down announcement filming was ceased and the film cans shelved, but we finally realised that we could change the ending and issue it as a sort of eulogy to the corps.

I was in the ROC for 28 years, 13 years as a full time officer. I still miss all the hundreds of friends
