The piece is recited by a robot voice which is made to sound like a human, and the "uncanny valley" effect accentuates the air of something not quite being as human as it once was. Cohen's voice coming in for the final lines underscores the humanity to be found in the "majesty of creation".

To me this song is about a conscious effort for a person, or possibly the whole human race, to try to end the self-perpetuating suffering of the human condition. The Moonlight Sonata is a very dour and melancholy piece of music, and when I listen to it, it makes me think of the way that suffering is perpetuated largely by an unconscious decision to not end it. I feel like the insane, "desaturated" birds mentioned at the end are lost souls, waylaid by suffering or melancholy.

This song was the reason why I bought Leonard Cohen's CD, and actually he has a great singing voice.

The more best of is no longer listed in iTunes I went there to purchase it only because the great event is on it. Where can I get it? Legally...

@Myrtone True. but they dont really need an excuse as you put it. You seemed to be acting like it was some sort of bad thing to post it. itll either be removed or it wont. personally I hope it wont. but it probly will eventually. I just dont see it as a big deal.

@chumon1992 Yes there is but that's no excuse either, all those other things are equally likely to be removed.

@Myrtone Also, you realize there is much more tan this on youtube that is copyrighted right? And...well...I'm pretty sure Leonard won't miss the few cents that this song would cost to buy. Just saying.
"I noticed this was missing from youtube. Classic Cohen." Unless permission was granted to use it, then good, please read the YouTube copyright policy.

@Myrtone Copyright is broken. I'm not going to deny people the magic of Cohen. I was introduced to him through piracy and I've bought countless albums and have seen him live as many times as he's toured since then.
The piece is actually The Moonlight Sonata, by Beethoven. I'm sure the irony of this isn't lost on you :)
Leonard added words. I've added pictures. What are you adding?

@bitcloud1 Copyright *is* boken but those who break it can and do suffer negative consequences. Giving people the magic of any artist is not your job, it is the job of those who own the rights, so get permission if you want to do things like this.

@Myrtone Thanks for the chat. Laws change when people refuse them - as Cohen did by using the Moonlight Sonata. People follow morals, not laws. When laws and morals do not align, people do not acknowledge them, and this is how change occurs. If you really want to have a discussion about the internet and copyright, perhaps we should meet up in 1995 when it was relevant.

@bitcloud1 Moonlight sonata, being written by Beethoven is obviously in the public domain. But derivatives works of public domain content, which this is, may be copyrighted.

@Myrtone I think you're discussing law and I'm discussing philosophy... This piece will outlive any soulless debate about copyright. Yes I'm deliberately challenging the notion of copyright in this instance because I believe this piece has not been heard. The world has not yet been changed enough by this piece of music. You can tell me it's copyright, but you likely won't convince me that the world, or even cohen himself is better without it being shared.
