Impressions - Talking About My Baby (Original Stereo)

Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield met each other in a Chicago church choir, and their mutual interest in music led them to a doo-wop group called The Roosters. Once The Roosters had these two men on board, they changed the name of the group to Jerry Butler & The Impressions, and they cut a record entitled "For Your Precious Love" which had been written by Curtis Mayfield. The song was a monster hit in June of 1958, and it led to Jerry Butler leaving the group for a solo career. Not to worry since the rhythmic driving force of this vocal group was still there in the person of Curtis Mayfield. The Impressions soon had their own hit with "Gypsy Woman" in 1961, and with Curtis Mayfield composing and leading the way they continued that success throughout the decade of the 60's. "Talking About My Baby" peaked at #12 in January of '64, and from that point on most of the Impressions' music would carry a social message in the form of such hits as "Amen", "Keep On Pushing", "People Get Ready", and many others.

I have this song on a compilation of songs from Motown...I'm glad I found it, but it is NOT Motwn...We need to lift up our other great 1960s music icons and not just those from Motown (although I love them too)...BUT LET'S GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE...This is fantast Curtis Mayfield writing and a great IMPRESSIONS performance from Chicago...most likely released on ABC-Paramount Records, a major label at the time!

@hollidayevery I get comments all the time making reference to the "Motown" sound when I knew the recording wasn't, and this is an example. Great music emanated from lots of locales during the 60's particularly Chicago (in this example), Memphis, Nashville, NYC, Los Angeles, and even Muscle Shoals, Al and Charlotte, NC (Arthur Smith Studios) all produced wonderful sounds.

The Impressions are the finest ever soul group that brought you to make you feel good.

Brother Curtis Mayfield and Brother Jerry Butler were the inspirations of the soul group.

Forgive me, I forget our other brother member of the group name.

The Impressions were a great soul group and may Brother Curtis Mayfield, be always be remembered.

@peasah2005 Sam Gooden and Fred Cash were the other two gentlemen that formed The Impressions with Curtis Mayfield through most of the latter part of the 1960's. After Curtis went solo, Sam and Fred were joined by Leroy Hutson for a short while (Leroy was a classmate of Donny Hathaway at Howard University). He went on to record several albums on the Curtom label as well.

@Nocaro So true. I like your thoroughness. Too bad the promotional/marketing teams were not as thorough in promoting their product after the period was over. So much of different varieties of R7B is being given short shrift. I'm so glad I still have my vinyl that I play on a semi regular...I want to hear more than just Detroit.

@edge78a Thanks for mentioning the additional labels that you did in response to my post. A little known fact is that Curtis Mayfield was put in charge of a reasonable amount of the 1960s OKEH output, such as some of the Major Lance,. and Billy Butler output. I was only a kid at the time, but noticed something decidedly different with that label. It was only years later that I connected the relationship that OKEH had to the COLUMBIA family of labels...

@hollidayevery, i've been on the Northern soul scene over here in England for nearly 40 years and we definately recognise the greatness of the Chicago artists,i had 50,000 records at one time including all the artists you mention and loads more on the Chess,Cadet,Checker,Argo,Check­mate group of labels.The Okeh label is a real iconic label over here. We appreciate all 60's &70's soul sounds and the Chicago offerings may not have had the marketing etc of the Motown machine but just as good KTF

@edge78a So much importance is placed on Motown of the 1960s to the detriment of recognizing that there were other great sounds such as the CHICAGO SOUND that acts like The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler, Major Lance, and many others like THE CHI-LITES, JACKIE ROSS, BARBARA ACKLIN, BILLY STEWART for example gave us. Nowadays all of this music is erroneously called Motown...Not so...It is it's own sound...LOVE IT! Even if it IS NOT Motown!!!

@hollidayevery Absolutely loved loved Leroy Hutson. During the final moments of station KACE a few years back, I believe Leroy Hutson was the last song played before the station went to another owner and format. It was memorable 7 days of music.

@jolvare Hell yes! It's that sweet guitar sound that brings you in right away. Curtis is a very under-rated guitar player...Just another reason why that instrument was, is and always will be my favorite instrument of them all. So versatile and every genre of music uses it in different ways. Bring back the GOOD music like this!
