    In an interview he said the song is so long because when they sang this song for the first time at a show, his ex girlfriend was in the front row. He said that in the middle of the song he started to make up lyrics because he wanted her back and that was his chance to say what was on his mind. It just turned fit perfectly into the song...

    I'd guess you didn't first hear the song while you were in high school then. Being exposed to this song at such a formative time in one's life tends to create lasting memories that come flooding back when they hear it again almost a decade or later.
