In an event on September 21, 2009 Congressman Arcuri announced that the FAA has awarded the Greater Binghamton Airport a grant for $630,000 to make improvements to barriers at the end of runways that stop planes from sliding past their planned stopping points during emergencies. The barriers, known as the engineered materials arresting system, are being updated as part of the airport's 20-year plan aimed at attracting more carriers.
