Seattle Slew's second race at 4, another 7 furlong allowance, this time against only four rivals. It came in August, three months after the Aqueduct allowance, with another setback causing change of plans after the Aqueduct race.

This was Slew's only start at Saratoga. He was scheduled to debut at Saratoga as a 2-year-old, but kicked his stall and inflamed a joint.

  • I wonder what the conditions for this race were..."Non winners of a Triple Crown race in 1978", perhaps? How does Seattle Slew qualify for allowance company? This must've been his first race back after the illness, and it had to be something like 'Non winners of $25,000 in last 6 months', or some other time-money condition.

  • Proud Birdie was a very good horse. He won at 3,the Everglade S.,the Bahamas S.,finished 2nd in the Fountain Of Youth S.,3rd in the Florida Derby. At 4,he won the Marlboro cup H. Once again, Slew(a great horse)beat Proud Birdie(a very good horse),he beat him rather easily, but if you'll notice Proud Birdie showed his class by not quitting in the stretch. There is a difference between a great horse and a very good horse. I wish I had the the recipe for it.

  • Gee that was a bit easy

  • @cf1970 Secretariat at 3 years of age ran a workout in 'MUD' the same time as Slew did here as a 4 year old for 7 furlongs. Split times were 57 2/5, 1:09 1/5 & 1:21 3/5. Don't know if you knew that or not my good man.

  • The lowest exacta in the history of Saratoga that day - Seattle Slew over Proud Birdie returned an eye-popping $3.20!!

  • Slew sure thrived on those off tracks, didn't he? Most horses would be lucky to post fractions and a time like that on GOOD tracks.

Amazing, consistent, dominant, Slew made mincemeat of that field. If only he, Spectacular Bid and Secretariat would have been born the same year. That would have been sublime to witness.

    Thanks.
